The Dutch refer to their pot stills as 'ketels', and Ketel One is named it after the oldest, coal-fired copper pot still used at the distillery – Distilleerketel #1. In 1879, Lars Olsson Smith introduced continuous distillation to Sweden, with which he made Absolut Rent Brännvin. Instead of the usual three or four times, the vodka was distilled an infinite number of times.

In Sweden, vodka was originally made from grapes and grains. Then the potato took over as did a government monopoly on production (except for a little export product called Absolut). But when the country joined the European Union, that all changed. Sweden has a strange relationship with potatoes and vodka.

Absolut is quintessentially Swedish vodka. It is manufactured in the southern Swedish region of 'Scania' (Skåne in Swedish), and more specifically, in the small towns of Nöbbelöv and Åhus. What’s more, Absolut is also made exclusively with grain from southern Sweden.
