Medicago truncatula Gaertner (or Medicago tribuloïdes Desr.), the so-called barrel medic, is a diploid (2 n = 2 x = 16) legume and is part of the genus Medicago (section Spirocarpos Ser. subsection Pachyspireae (Urb.) Heyn), family Fabaceae, subfamily Papilionoideae, and tribe Trifolieae. Medicago truncatula has been chosen as a premier model legume because it is closely related to economically important forage species such as alfalfa (Medicago sativa; Young and Udvardi, 2009), and it is invaluable for cross-legume genomic comparison studies (Tang et al., 2014).
